I began my career in education working for a medical communication company coordinating conferences, seminars, and special events. After getting some experience, I became the Program Manager of the Continuing Medical Education at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. For ten years, I worked on their nationally and internationally based post-graduate programs for physicians, surgeons, and ancillary HCPs. During that time, I wrote three ACCME accreditation reports for the AMA, allowing their programs to offer educational credit.
In 2002, I accepted a faculty position teaching English at the local community college. In 2007, I began working for Raytheon as a START Linguist and Corporate Trainer in Russia. I have a B.A. in International Studies and French, so this international assignment was a dream come true. While in Russia, I earned my M.A. in Education concentrating in Curriculum and Education while conducting corporate training on site. After the START treaty ended, I spent two seasons working at Taos New Mexico, teaching children at their school. This way, I have experience teaching adults and children.
Since I was originally from the east coast, I relocated to North Carolina, where as a contractor, I began teaching at Ft Bragg’s US JFK SWCS in their Language, Regional Expertise and Culture Program (LREC). I was one of the few instructors who taught all three disciplines. I received the US Army’s Teacher’s Certification in their Experiential Learning Model. When my contract came to an end, I decided to pursue tutoring, since I really enjoy the 1:1 interaction and helping learners succeed. I obtained my ESL and began teaching English remotely to international students. Now, I believe I can apply my varied experience to a local audience and tutor/advice various learners and help them succeed in this globalized world.
Learning in its simplest form, is changing behavior as a result of experience. What experiences have shaped your learning habits, styles, and success?
